"The Salish Sea is possibly the most recently named large body of water on the planet. Named by both Canada and the United States in 2010, the designation was meant to tie together and complement existing names - the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Strait of Georgia and Puget Sound. By connecting the Pacific Northwest's inland seas together into a single name, The Salish Sea, it is hoped we might realize we're all joined by this rich salt water connection. This mural was painted for the Whidbey Camano Island Land Trust for an outdoor wayside installation on top of the bluff you see in the painting's background... Think of this place as a puzzle. It has many individual pieces all working together. Lose a piece and the puzzle is incomplete. Lose small forage fish, you lost salmon, lost salmon and you lose the orca. It's all connected, and yet it's coming apart, and it's up to us collectively to heal the fraying edges of this natural word" --container.
